James Marshall created something lasting. It may never be known whether the divine spark came from the head of the British-born engineer during a sleepless night, or whether his continuous experimentation led to his success, but posterity can rest assured. The pocket spring mattresses, which were created based on the idea of the inventor, who founded a company in Toronto, Canada in 1900, are still popular today.
With fame comes the bias of fans and critics. Billions of fans worldwide consider it one of the best, and wouldn't sleep on anything else for any money, while naysayers cool things down, calling Marshall-system mattresses old-fashioned, complicated, and unreasonably expensive.

To…
What is a pocket sprung mattress?
Historians and experts probably agree that the birth of pocket spring mattresses was motivated by the elimination of the shortcomings of previous beds. The essence of Marshall's invention was that he replaced the steel frame structure holding the springs of the almost monopolistic Bonell system with interconnected textile bags.

What did this change?
First, the springs, which rest on a common base, are shaped like an hourglass, are wide at both ends, are sandwiched in the middle, and are a few centimeters in diameter. Each of them has its own “socket”. Due to the undoubtedly complex structure of the fabric bags, the tight steel spirals are able to compress almost independently of their neighbors under load. Those in the know today formulate the consequences of this as follows:
"The mattress's point elasticity and shape-following ability have improved."
This was a huge step forward, as the new pocket spring mattress not only spared those tossing and turning from the familiar creaking of steel structures touching each other, but also from the much-criticized phenomenon of rolling over. Those sleeping together on Marshall mattresses finally did not feel their partner moving around at night.
Another advantage of the pocket spring system was also experienced by customers who were sensitive to the fashion trends of their time as soon as they went to bed. Unlike their traditional, bonell spring counterparts, pocket spring mattresses could be sat on without their entire surface tilting in the direction of the load. What's more, wide, double beds no longer sloped towards their heavier users.
The novelty itself guaranteed success, and to make customers even more satisfied, the achievement, which ensures comfortable sleep, also preserved the advantages of the previous steel spring structures.
Pocket spring mattresses have withstood heavy loads since the beginning of their career. They have proven their longevity in hotels and family homes, and it is also worth noting that their hollow structure ensures excellent ventilation.
Skeptics, of course, rightly suggest that all this is in the past…
What's up today?
Marshall probably never imagined the possibility in his wildest dreams, but the mattresses associated with his name have conquered the world in a century. Their dynamic rise in popularity in developed countries gained momentum at the turn of the 1940s, and in our country it began thirty years ago.
The modern pocket spring mattress is one of the most popular types of bed base. Both professional and private users prefer it over its competitors...
And what makes a hundred-year-old mattress modern?
The principle may be old, but the solutions are new. Just as with the internal combustion engines that power cars, so is the case with pocket spring mattresses. Today's spring mattresses made of modern materials are at least as similar to Marshall's original solution as our cars are to the legendary four-wheelers of the heroic age of motorization.
Of course, built-in computers, beeping speakers, and illuminated touch screens in mattresses can only be found in extremely special cases for now, but the structure of the spring frame has already become surprisingly complex.
It is worth starting the list of changes with the springs themselves. The hourglass-shaped spirals, which were originally made of ordinary steel, are now made of special materials that ensure excellent shape retention. Depending on the intended firmness of the mattress, the thickness of the wires used can vary between 1.2 and 2 millimeters. Thinner springs create a softer, thicker ones create a more solid feeling lying surface.
The number of springs has also increased. Instead of a few dozen coils installed at the dawn of pocket spring mattresses' market penetration, hundreds are now used.
How much exactly?
Double mattresses can contain at least six hundred, and in extreme cases even more than two thousand, individual pocket springs. In practice, this means that our bodies are supported by an average of two hundred to three hundred, and in high-end beds, four hundred to five hundred, steel coils per square meter.
The multitude of springs built into the core of the mattress itself contributes to a comfortable and healthy rest, regardless of changes in body position during sleep. However, this is far from everything.
What else is coming?
The future has already begun, pocket spring mattresses are now arriving in specialty stores with very special solutions. The most striking specialty is the division of the mattress surface into comfort or ergonomic zones.
During the initial wing trials, manufacturers settled for three areas of different elasticity, and then five-, seven-, and even nine-zone mattresses appeared.
Quality pocket spring mattresses are currently manufactured in a seven-zone design, providing different levels of firmness support for the head, neck, shoulders, back, waist, buttocks, and legs.
And all this with springs?
Believe it or not, the secret to creating comfort zones next to each other actually lies in the springs.
Remember? We mentioned that the number of built-in springs and the thickness of their material determine the elasticity of the sleeping surface... That's the trick. The core of modern pocket spring mattresses is made up of pockets containing springs of different sizes and materials, with different densities for each ergonomic zone.
But don't fall for the hype! Increasing comfort zones is not enough to ensure healthy sleep. It would be pointless to buy a mattress advertised with twenty or thirty zones. We dare say that it is questionable whether you would feel any of the beneficial effects of the surprisingly complicated, but presumably extremely expensive structure, or whether you would regret your visibly slimmer wallet every night.

Accept this much in advance…
The secret to comfort lies in layers
The heart of a pocket sprung mattress is undoubtedly the intricate system of springs. The durable, steel-structured core determines the mattress's shape-following ability, general and point elasticity. However, the devil is usually in the details.
What else should you pay attention to?
We can help! You can measure the thickness of a mattress without a measuring tape.
Quality pocket spring mattresses start at a height of twenty-five to twenty-six centimeters, of which the steel structure takes up fourteen to fifteen centimeters. The remaining part is shared by the various filling layers and the covers.
Let us tell you, even the most high-quality pocket spring design is worth nothing without the right comfort layers. Different cushioning suits each spring structure, and you'll be truly surprised.
There is no universal recipe, there is no perfect solution for all users.
As many houses, as many customs?
Let's say there are as many mattresses as there are people. Men and women, thin and stocky, young and old, sleep peacefully on different surfaces.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating, if you want a suitable mattress, you personally have to choose the ideal elasticity and softness of the surface.
We were serious!
You can stretch out on any of our mattresses in the Czinger Home showroom. You can test whether it supports your waist properly and whether it sinks under your shoulders when you turn to your side. Lie down comfortably, while we tell you what you can expect from each comfort layer.
What is the most fashionable?
Many people swear by memory foam pillows… They are right, these synthetic materials, produced in various hardnesses, perfectly take the shape of the person lying on them, adapting to the sleeping position. Their characteristic is that they soften from the heat of the human body, and are especially pleasant in winter because they warm you up a lot.
Cold foam comfort materials are also popular. The foams used in countless versions, from soft to really hard, are a great match for pocket spring mattresses. They are also flexible, so it's up to you which density version you choose.
Latex layers can be a similarly good solution. The flexible, yet durable material is the ideal complement to a long-lasting pocket spring system.
And if that's not enough, you can also try coconut filling materials that provide a rigid surface.
And there's the draft!
Yes, you should definitely buy a cover! Modern pocket spring mattresses are durable, a quality mattress pad can remain ready for service for ten to fifteen years. This is not changed by the fact that the comfort materials that determine the softness and hardness of the sleeping surface can wear out sooner. By using the right accessories and toppers, the outdated comfort layers can be replaced, but there are some things that can cause even the best pocket spring mattress to need replacing prematurely.
During use, mattress pads are not only put to the test by the weight of the body lying on them. Sweat and spilled morning coffee are serious opponents. The sheets are no obstacle to orange juice spilling between the covers, one small "accident" and we can leave a stain on the previously spotless mattress forever.
It's a shame to take the risk! You can easily prevent such inconveniences by purchasing a removable, washable, and reversible cover for your pocket spring mattress.
You buy it, we'll take it.
Believe me, if you've thought about all this, you're already over the difficult part.
Smile when your "well-informed" friend scares you by saying that the pocket spring mattress is too heavy and that you'll have to rent a truck to transport it home... It's true, like all steel spring mattresses, the Marshall system weighs sixty to seventy kilos, but don't let that discourage you.
There's no need to worry. At the end of our briefing, we've got two pieces of news that you're sure to be happy about.
